In the process of researching and documenting how the Influence
Industry operates in different political contexts around the world, our
project and our partners examined over 500 companies that play a role in this
wider ecosystem — from global data brokers to local campaign consultancies.

The Influence Industry Learning Hub is an educational guide to help you learn about the role of private firms in political influence and the collection, analysis and sales of political data. The Learning Hub is based on half a decade of research in over 20 countries, expert consultation and our curated library of resources.

The Voter's Guide workshop contains a workshop plan, workshop slides, activities, as well as links to resources. The workshop resources support participants learning about the foundations of digital and political influence.

The Voter's Guide Workshop

The stand-alone activities are centered on digital and political influence and are available to be integrated into workshops.

The Voter's Guide Activities

The most common model used for psychometric profiling is the OCEAN model, named for the five main personality traits it measures. This tool allows visitors to take their own personality test, which then feeds them political ads.

This workshop is designed to engage voter's around the world, build media and digital literacy and encourage critical media consumption.

The workshop plan for facilitators offers support through definitions, structure and areas of suggested advance preparation. The slides are aligned with the workshop plan, offering visuals and text for the participants. Workshop aim: Participants will gain an understanding of how political parties obtain and use personal data to target content to influence the decisions and behaviours of voters. The workshop introduces a framework for understanding the role of private firms in data-driven political influence campaigns. The workshop also provides tools to assist voters in developing their political agency and personal political opinions in an environment of polarising and misleading political content.

Workshop time: Three hours
Experience level: This workshop is designed for people who are interested in political practice but are beginners to understanding the topic of technology in elections.
Number of participants: 5 - 25 participants with one facilitator
Workshop facilities (online): Collaborative online board which allows pictures to be pasted; pen and paper, or digital drawing tool, for all participants
Workshop facilities (offline): Aluminium foil; Pens and paper.
Workshop format: The workshop can be run online or offline. Half-way through the workshop there should be a short pause so that the participants can have time to reflect, stretch and rest. There are six sections each including:

More Voter's Guide Resources

In 2022, the Influence Industry Project and <a href="https://digispaceafrica.org/">Digispace Africa</a> partnered to develop a localised version of the Data Detox Kit's <a href="https://datadetoxkit.org/en/privacy/voting/">A Voter's Guide: 7 Tips to Detox Your Data</a>. The Digispace Africa team used the existing resource as a base to anchor their research, but expanded and edited the guide to include examples relevant to voters in Ghana and across the region resulting in the original guides below. The Digispace Africa team also translated the guides into Twi and Ewe. 
These guides can serve as standalone resources for voter's and can also be supplementary materials for participants of the <ColouredLink href="https://influenceindustry.org/en/inform/resources/voters-guide-workshop/" theme="inform">Voter's Guide workshop</ColouredLink>.

Influence Industry Project and Data Detox Kit, was localised for Ghanaian
voters in both Twi and Ewe. The guide explains data-driven campaigning at a
high level and can be a good supplement to the workshop.
